Reduce junk mail
The average British letterbox gets 650 pieces of junk mail
posted through their letter box every year and about a third of
this is thrown straight into the bin. 17.5 billion pieces of junk
mail are produced every year in UK including addressed and
unaddressed mailings. It is estimated that 550,000 tonnes of paper
and 16.5 billion litres of water are used to produce these.
So if we stop junk mail then we can significantly reduce the
paper waste and it doesn’t take too long to do it. So let’s do it
now.
The Mailing Preference Service (MPS)
The Mailing Preference Service is a free non profit service
which allows subscribers to register their wish not to receive
unsolicited addressed mail. It allows you to have your name removed
from most mailing lists in the country.
To find out more about the MPS or to use the service call 0845 703
4599, you can also find out more and register online at http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/.
Remember, if you do wish to receive direct mail but just want to
make sure it does not end up in a landfill site, all of your paper
can be recycled in Tower Hamlets through the pink sacks and purple
bins.
Royal Mail Opt Out Service
Royal Mail will stop delivering unaddressed mail to your home if
you choose to opt out of the service. You can do this by writing to
them, or emailing them. Please see Royal
Mail Opt Out Service for more information.
Get a ‘no junk mail’ Sticker
Placing a ‘no junk mail’ sign on your door is the only way to
stop unwanted mailings hand delivered by local traders.

Be careful!
If you fill in any forms while buying a product or services,
look carefully in the small print and tick the appropriate box to
say that you don’t want any further information about ‘other
products and services’. Also do not agree for your personal details
to be shared with other companies so that your name and address
will not be added to numerous mailing lists.
