Reuse and recycling centre (RRC)
Residents can bring a wide range of materials to
the Reuse and Recycling centre for disposal.
No Commercial or industrial waste will be accepted at
the RRC. Tower Hamlets council are no longer operating the
Waste Transfer Station at Northumberland Wharf. Please
contact Cory Environmental on 020 7417 5200 for any enquiries about
the Waste Transfer Station.
Please note that we do not accept tyres,
plasterboard, asbestos or liquids at the site.
Items that can be taken to the RRC for reuse or
recycling are listed below:

- Batteries (household)
- Bikes* (adult bikes only are
recycled)
- Books
- Car batteries
- Cardboard
- Clothes
- Computer monitors
- Cooking oil
- Engine oil
- Fluorescent tubes
- Food and drink cans
- Food and drink cartons
- Fridges and freezers
- Furniture
- Gas bottles
- Glass bottles and jars (all
colours)
- General household waste
- Green garden waste
- Low energy light bulbs
- Mobile phones
- Paint
- Paper
- Plastic bottles and their lids (food and
drinks bottles, cleaning product bottles and toiletry
bottles)
- Plastic pots (yoghurt pots, plastic
flowerpots, and toiletry pots)
- Plastic tubs and boxes (fruit punnets,
margarine tubs, ice cream tubs, and gift packaging
boxes)
- Printer cartridges
- Scrap metal
- Shoes
- Small electrical items
- Televisions
- Textiles
- Telephone directories
- Toner cartridges

- Wood & Timber (including MDF, plywood,
chipboard etc.)
- Yellow pages
*Any bikes taken to the site, are taken away and any defective
parts are replaced to make the bike roadworthy. The bikes can be
purchased by the general public, directly from the repairer,
ReCycling, 110 Elephant Road London SE17. (By the Elephant and
Castle). Tel no: 020 7703 7001.
Opening hours
Monday to Friday: 8am to 8pm
Saturday and Sunday: 9am to 6pm
Bank holidays: 9am to 4.30pm
The centre will be closed each year on December, 25.
Vehicle restrictions and commercial waste
The RRC is for the use of residents of Tower
Hamlets only and business use is strictly prohibited.
Please note that there is a
height restriction for vehicles entering the site of 1.94
metres or 6ft 5ins. This is in place to prevent
unacceptable usage by commercial enterprises.
Residents using a van must be prepared to show
proof of residence within Tower Hamlets and be weighed on the
weighbridge. It is advisable for all residents using the
centre to bring proof of residence in case they are asked to show
this to centre staff, even if they are in a car.
Discretion will be operated by the site
supervisors if disposal of non household waste is suspected (such
as high volumes of waste or waste that appears to be of commercial
origin).
Any visitor using violent, abusive,
disrespectful or threatening behaviour will be permanently denied
use of the RRC. Details will be recorded and, if threatening
behaviour persists, the police will be informed.
Acceptable forms of proof of residence
include:
- Council Tax statement (within the last 6
months)
- Utility bill (within last 6
months)
- Driver’s licence
Compost, compost bins and wormeries available
Bags of compost made from green garden waste are available for
sale at a subsidised priced of £3.26 for a 30 litre bag.
Compost bins and wormeries are also available for purchase at
this site for £5 each. Please call the council on 020 7364
6931 between 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday to make payment before
collecting from the RRC.
