Local land charges: property
search
It is vital to have a search carried out when buying a property
as this will tell you about plans for new roads, planning
agreements, tree preservation orders, listed buildings, financial
charges and enforcement notices, which may affect the property.
There are various searches available. If you are
not sure which type of search you need, speak to your solicitor or
the land charges team. The land charges team deals with
around 9,000 searches each year. We use information held on various
records and registers within Tower Hamlets.
The range of searches available includes:
- register only searches - a search of the land charges register
only
- a full comprehensive postal search (which includes information
from other departments and optional questions including a commons
registration search)
- an online search request via the NLIS (National Land
Information Service)
- a full personal search service (please book in advance)
The land charges register holds a central source of information
on properties within Tower Hamlets. As a customer wishing to buy
property in the borough you, your solicitor or legal advisor may be
required to undertake searches of the register and other related
enquiries as part of the conveyance process.
