School mentoring schemes
Mentoring is a relationship between an adult
and a young person that provides the young person with consistent
support, guidance, assistance and non-judgemental adult advice.
Mentoring also gives adults the opportunity to
be a positive role model for young people by sharing their
knowledge, skills and life experiences

Learning mentors – removing barriers to learning and
supporting achievement
Learning mentors work mainly with children and
young people who are significantly underachieving. They are:
- salaried staff who work with pupils to help
them to identify and address barriers to learning
- a bridge across academic and pastoral support roles with
the aim of ensuring that individual pupils engage more effectively
with learning and achieve appropriately
- a key ingredient in many approaches to improve the
achievement level of pupils
Learning mentors spend most of their time
working one-to-one with pupils, but will also work with small
groups and sometimes with the families of mentees.
Learning mentors are part of the Children’s
Workforce. The Children’s Workforce Development Council (CWDC)
endorses their training, qualifications and minimum standards of
practice. For information on CWDC Induction Training Programmes and
national accredited qualifications
please visit CWDC - learning
mentors.
