Drainage
Building control is responsible for ensuring that all building
work carried out within the borough complies with the building
regulations. We deal with the construction of new buildings, change
of use, alterations or conversion of existing buildings. This is
done by determining applications, after consultation with the fire
authority where appropriate, within statutory time limits and
inspecting the building work on site.
In addition, the regulations promote energy efficiency in
buildings and contribute to meeting the needs of disabled
people.
Building control also imposes conditions to preserve public
safety and amenity in respect of demolition works. We also provide
a 24 hour, 7 days a week response to reports of alleged dangerous
structures or buildings, acting to remove immediate danger where
required.
National building regulations, which are made under the Building
Act 1984, are designed to ensure the health, safety and welfare of
people in and around buildings by outlining requirements for
building design and construction.
Drainage records are held in building control for individual
buildings in either microfiche or drawing format and are available
to view on request. To view drainage records of a particular
building please contact building control to make an appointment.
There may be a research and retrieval fee payable for this service.
Please note: we cannot always guarantee that we will have the
relevant drainage information you require.
The council’s official map of sewers data is held by the
highways section. To view sewer records please contact the highways
section on 020 7364 5004, fax: 0207 364 3121, or email generalenquiries@towerhamlets.gov.uk.
