Derelict properties and public safety
Empty Properties
There are privately owned properties lying
empty in Tower Hamlets. There is an undoubted housing need in
Tower Hamlets, and these vacant properties could provide much
needed accommodation. Many of these properties are in a
neglected state and have a damaging effect in the areas in which
they are located.
What are we doing about it?
The empty property team aims to trace, then
encourage the owners of empty properties to bring them back into
use. If there are any public health issues we liaise with
environmental health to ensure the appropriate action is taken.
We confirm ownership through land registry
records, tracing the owner, meeting them and writing to them. We
provide information to help them bring their properties back into
use, including VAT incentives, lease schemes and grants.
If a structure is dangerous we liaise with
building control. As a last resort we can use enforcement
powers such as compulsory purchase and empty dwelling management
orders.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Can I have a list of empty properties?
No, we do not provide this list as it would be
likely to prejudice the prevention or detection of crime. We
believe that it is not in the public interest to release this
information because to do so may lead to vandalism, theft, arson or
squatting.
Can I have a grant?
Empty property grants are available. Please
see Private sector – empty property
grants for further details on eligibility and the
conditions.
How can I get a certificate to confirm the property has been
vacant so that I pay my builder reduced VAT?
Contact council tax and they will confirm it
in writing for you.
Will the owner find out who has complained?
No, we can keep your details confidential.
