Coborn Opportunities Project
There are two Social Enterprises and one which
is currently being developed.
Coborn Garden Project:
Growing plants and produce for sale, promoting conservation and
working in partnership with other organisations within the local

Coborn Artists: The
opportunity to create an Art Portfolio throughout the year to be
displayed both at local Art Exhibitions and markets.
Coborn Makaton/Communication Project: The
Project is currently open to referrals from Adults with learning
difficulties who would like to learn or improve their existing
Makaton skills. There is further learning opportunities for people
who wish to train to assist in running Makaton workshops. This is
achieved by working on a portfolio which is recognised by the
Makaton charity. The project currently provides taster sessions to
staff, parents and carers in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
The aim is to develop the project to run workshops at a cost in the
near future, developing a social enterprise.
Groups and Activities: There
is a programme of groups and activities both within the centre and
in the local community. There is also access to courses at
Tower Hamlets college, but these can also be accessed without
attending Coborn
Advocacy: There are two
advocacy groups, one which focuses on internal issues and ensuring
students are involved in service planning and development at the
Coborn Project.
The other advocacy group is involved with
external issues and have representation at the Partnership board,
The Making It Happen group and involvement with other agencies in
the local community to gives feedback and points of view. There is
also an independent drop in advocacy service who attend once a week
to support students with advocacy.
Music/Drama: There is a music
group which runs in partnership with local schools, with
performances held at the local schools. There is a drama group
which holds performances several times per year.
Health and fitness: There is
a group that attends the Mile End leisure centre for a fitness
session once a week, a swimming group and yoga group at Coborn.
There are walking groups both within the community and throughout
London. There is also a weekly Bowling Group. Cookery sessions are
available, 2 per week which focus on Health eating. There are also
Health Awareness Groups to promote Healthy Lifestyles.
Art/Craft/Photography: Craft
is available at the Idea Store in Bow once a week with Tower
Hamlets College.Art is available both for people who wish to create
a portfolio to exhibit and also for those who enjoy art but may not
wish to exhibit. Photography is available which creates photo
portfolio works from within the local community. This creates the
opportunity to learn photography, computer and presentation
skills.

Jewish Care is the largest provider of health
and Social services for the Jewish Community in the UK. Jewish
Care’s Stepney Commu7nity Centre has been at the heart of East

Mind in
Tower Hamlets and Newham
Counselling service: The counselling services
at Mind in Tower Hamlets and Newham provide weekly individual
counselling. The sessions last 50 minutes and are an ideal
opportunity for you to focus on your issues in a safe and
confidential environment. The service adheres to BACP guidelines
for ethics and good practice in counselling and psychotherapy. We
operate a charge for our service which is as follows: £5 for
people on benefits, £10 for people working part-time, and £15 for
full time workers. If you would like to make a referral please

Welfare benefit advice:
Casework is provided on all welfare benefits, including
applications, advice on rights and obligations regarding benefits,
request reviews, reconsiderations, appeals for tribunals,
overpayment issues, local government issues (housing or council tax
benefit) , better-off calculations in case of income from
employment, social fund applications and reviews, communications
with DWP, Job Centre Plus and local councils, medical assessment
forms, working and child tax credit issues, representation for
debts under £5,000 and planned consolidation as well as advice on
debts over £5,000.
Mental health recovery and support
services: Supporting people with mental health issues to
towards recovery and remain well in the community. This
generic service provides intensive one to one support using the
recovery tool devised by Mental Health Providers Forum.
- Using the Recovery Star Support service users in crisis and who
need to be supported to access services in a more planned way.
- To support service users who have severe and enduring mental
health issues and who lack awareness of the clinical pathways into
services.
- Casework and work in partnership with assertive outreach
Service, CMHT’s, THIES and the Dual diagnosis Team to engage with
service users to support and promote recovery in the hospital and
the community.
- Encourage service to access therapeutic/mental health wellbeing
activities available in Open House Mind in Tower hamlets and
Newham.
- To support people with complex needs who are linked to the
Assertive Outreach service, CMHTs, Dual diagnosis services.
- Facilitate users’ access to relevant specialist services, both
in the community and in the hospital
- Offer support to people who are newly admitted to services and
who are not sure of the range of services open to them.
- To support clients to access advocacy and counselling
services.
- Provide information to users, carers and the community
regarding mental health services and resources, treatment options
and aftercare; complimentary to that which statutory services are
bound to provide.
- Provide information to users on healthy living style, e.g.,
healthy diet, exercises, stop smoking
Complementary support:
Traditional Chinese medical massage or acupuncture, homeopathy,
music therapy, art therapy. There is charge of £5 or £7 for Chinese
therapies. There may be a cost involved for homeopathic
remedies.
Social engagement: There are
Out of Hours services on Monday and Thursday evenings with
activities and support workers. A meal is normally prepared
together with users of the service. There is a separate regular
Sunday activity group, which often goes out to different activities
in and around the borough. A range of activities take place Monday
to Friday during the day at Open House, such as storytelling and
poetry group, photography group, cycling, badminton, and movement
therapy.
Independent advocacy: We
provide community and inpatient advocacy service for both clients
who are informal (Inclusive) and those who are detained under the
mental health act (IMHA). This service is available from
within the mental health service at Mile End Hospital and from our
main office at 13 Whitethorn Street.

Our services are for people who live in Tower
Hamlets and Newham, who are 18+, and for people who have experience
of mental health and emotional issues.

Road Day Centre
Our group activities and programmes promote
good health and mental well-being, and are aimed at supporting
individuals through their recovery, promoting social inclusion, and
reducing isolation. We aim to support individuals in their personal
development and recovery through facilitating a range of skills
based programmes alongside physical health activities and
therapeutic groups. The service works to support individuals in
accessing education, training and vocational opportunities, leisure
pursuits as well as other community resources.
The centre provides a range of structured day
activities and a drop-In on two afternoons a week. Our projects and
groups are as follows:
Vocational projects:
Gardening and horticulture, all sorts shop
retail project, tea bar catering project, IT.
Lifestyle and therapeutic groups
Weight awareness, art, music, drama, Bengali
men’s group, mosaic cultural group for African, African Caribbean
and Asian people, massage, dance and movement, soccer fitness and
other physical health activities (these may vary), pottery,
acupuncture. Please call for details of these groups.
Who is it for?
Pritchards Road groups and projects are open
to adults experiencing mental health problems between the ages of
18 – 65 and living in Tower Hamlets.
Any of the following people can refer you:
care co-ordinator, nurse, GP, support worker or psychiatrist.
However you must have a care co-ordinator or be care
managed.
To use our services
Your care co-ordinator/support worker can
arrange for you to attend an informal visit, this will allow you to
visit the centre and find out more about the service we provide.
From this both you and your co-ordinator will need to complete a
referral form (which you can get from the centre). We will also
need a copy of your care plan and a risk assessment.
Once all of these documents have been received
the team will be able to make a decision based on the information
given. If you meet our referral criteria you will be invited in for
an initial assessment and will be informed of the outcome within 2
weeks of your assessment.

Riverside Centre
The centre offers a variety of services. These
include chiropody, optician and dentist, all of whom visit on a
regular basis. It may be possible to arrange for your doctor,
district nurse, occupational therapist or wheelchair service to
visit you at the centre if appropriate.
In addition to visiting health services, the
centre also offers assistance with personal care i.e. assisting
with washing and toileting. The centre offers a variety of
interesting and stimulating activities that are designed to meet
the needs of our users. Some of the activities include art and
crafts, reminiscence, music and movement, darts, quizzes,
crosswords, discussion groups and reflexology. We also have a
'beauty group' where you can get your hair washed and set or your
nails cut and varnished. Outings to places of interest can
sometimes be arranged during summer months.
Tea/coffee and toast are provided on arrival
between 9.30am and 10.30am. Lunch is provided at mid day, and
special diets can be catered for if requested i.e. diabetic, halal
etc. There is a choice of two hot meals or a salad, and the choice
of three desserts. Tea/coffee and biscuits are again available in
the afternoon. There is a charge for all meals and beverages, the
amount of which is reviewed annually. Payment should be made in
advance if possible.
Who is it for?
Poplar Day Centre provides care, support and
stimulation for up to forty older people of retirement age, whether
frail, physically disabled or experiencing isolation or emotional
difficulties. Users must meet the council’s ‘eligibility criteria’
for receiving a service. The centre aims to ensure an
equitable provision of service, regardless of disability, religion,
gender or cultural requirements. This is achieved primarily through
promoting user involvement in daily tasks.
To use our services
Placements at the centre can only be offered
following an assessment by a Social Worker. The assessment is to
clarify the individual’s needs and ensure the Authorities
eligibility criteria are met. If the assessment confirms the need
for a day care placement, a referral/care plan is passed to the day
centre.
Anybody can refer someone who they think is in
need of care and support to Adult Services for an assessment. This
includes family members, carers, doctors and potential services
users themselves. All new referrals should be made to:

Per session (half day): £25.38 with transport & £22.83
without transport. For two sessions (a full day), the cost is
£50.73 with transport and £45.66 without transport. The
above costs are normally covered by a service

Russia Lane
Day Centre
We provide specialist day care support and
stimulation for people with moderate to severe dementia who meet
the council’s eligibility criteria for receiving a service. We have
a comprehensive activity programme which includes current affairs,
movement to music, arts and crafts, outings, gardening and a range
of other activities. We also arrange for chiropody and opticians to
visit.
Russia Lane has a carer’s forum, supporting
those who care for family or friends at Russia Lane Day Centre.
Our staff are fully trained to provide
personal care to service users and will offer assistance with
feeding if required.
We have an on-site senior Occupational
Therapist who will assess individual needs and refer to appropriate
agencies for aids and adaptations required.
We offer half or full day sessions.
Who is it for?
Adults who have a diagnosis of moderate to
severe dementia.

Centre
We provide culturally appropriate social care
for service users suffering disabilities. The service users we
provide services for are from a predominantly Bangladeshi/Muslim
background though the service is open to users of all races/creeds.
The maximum number of users per day is forty. Amongst services we
provide are:
Personal care support for users who need
it(incontinence pad changes/catheter emptying/support with other
toileting needs). Support at meal times (taking meals to
table/providing support with the separating of fish bones/pouring
water etc). Making services accessible to users such as
dwp/opticians/dentists/chiropodists. Regular support with
prayers and pre prayer ablutions.
Hairdressing and massage services made
accessible. Exercise sessions that are catered to the needs of
disabled users.
Discussion based activities to encourage users
to speak out re their needs. Coalition work with outside
agencies such as safh(social action for health) to inform users on
ways to better manage their health and increase their independence.
Intergenerational work with local schools to increase
understanding between elders and younger generation.
Arts and crafts sessions. Music
sessions. Regular trips to parks/seaside etc.
Weekly shopping trips for users at numerous
shopping locations around the city. Freshly cooked meals
prepared for lunch and breakfast (lunches are culturally
appropriate curries cooked with minimum amounts of oil/salt and
spice).
Regular user forum meetings providing users
with an arena to discuss their opinions on services. Day Care
Manager and Service Co-ordinators operate an open door policy by
which users can discuss issues directly with management as and when
they arise if they should choose to do so. Joint work done
with projects such as ‘dignity’ to ensure that users are provided
with information on how to get help if they face abuse.
The centre is fully wheelchair
accessible. Staff speak
English/Bengali/Urdu. Door to door service for all
users via the centres transport services
Who is it for?
All adults who suffer from barriers to
achieving their social support needs.
To use our services
Users need to be referred through social
services.
1. The social worker will email/post the
referral papers
2. The co-ordinator/s will go over the paper work then visit
the potential user at home to see if the centre has the resources
to provide potential service user with support
3. If centre can accommodate the needs of the user then risk
assessments/support plans are drawn up for the user and they are
placed on appropriate transport runs /key workers are allocated
thereafter the service commences.
4. If the centre cannot accommodate the needs of the user then
the social worker is informed as to why this is. All efforts are
made to accommodate users referred.
All referrals are to sent for the attention of
the Co-ordinators (Sultana Akter / Anowar Salehin) or the Day Care
Manager (Enayet Sarwar).
What is the cost?
£40.30 for week days. £58.22 for
weekends. (as of 14th July 2010)

Sundial
Centre
The Sundial Centre is a vibrant and welcoming
community centre offering an exciting range of activities, services
and events. We run a full timetable of activities, groups and
services ranging from keep fit, singing and bowls, through to arts
and crafts, computers and bingo. We also run events, health
and information services and projects, such as stopping smoking,
massage, financial information and parties! We are dedicated to
meeting the needs of the local community, with an emphasis on
services for people 50+ in our bright and spacious building.
Our popular Sundial Café is open to everyone 5
days a week 12 midday to 1.30pm serving delicious, good value,
freshly cooked food and our coffee bar is open for refreshments
from 10am to 3pm.
All of our members are encouraged to use our
full range of services, to get involved in decision making and we
welcome volunteers, young and old. As well as all our drop in
activities, we run a range of other projects, including: Day
care service for over-65s. LinkAge Plus: Group activities and
outreach to older people their homes (delivered by five
organisations across Tower Hamlets). Outreach support for isolated
older people. Learning zone, which provides employment advice,
training and qualifications

Who is it for?
Most of our activities are aimed at people
over 50. Our Learning Zone is aimed at anyone over 18. We always
welcome younger adults to the centre and would love anyone to get
involved.
To use our services
We welcome all adults at Sundial, particularly
over 50s. Most of our services do not have eligibility criteria and
all we ask is for a short registration form when you first
arrive.
What is the cost?
The centre is free to drop in at anytime
during opening hours. Some groups/activities may charge a small fee
to cover costs (avg price of £1.00).

Sundial Centre Day Care Service
The Sundial Day Care service provides a high
quality, stimulating day service for older adults 65 +. We support
and enable older people to actively maintain and improve their
health and wellbeing . Our service includes transport to pick
clients up from their home to bring them to our bright, spacious
and caring environment.
We provide:
- A large range of activities services and
events
- Fully accessible transport to and from
home
- Trained care staff that are engaging, helpful
and understanding; making a passionate difference to the lives of
older adults.
- A service that is sensitive to cultural
diversity.
- Access to a range of well-being services,
from benefit advice to chiropody, eye tests and
hairdressing
- Healthy, tasty meals, freshly prepared on
site in our restaurant
- Opportunities to share your experiences and
learn new skills
- A place to meet old friends and make new
ones
- User forums where you can have your say in
planning services.
Our service offers 30 places per day. It is
managed by Peabody on behalf of London Borough of Tower Hamlets
Adults Health and Wellbeing (Social Services).

Older Adults 65 + referred by Social Services.

To use our services
Our Day Care service can be accessed by people
over 65 who have had a care assessment carried out by Social
Services and who have been identified as being eligible for
support. Your Social Worker/Broker will work with you to refer you
to our service. We will then be able to look with you at the best
arrangement for you; days you come in, your interests, needs and
preferences.
What is the cost?
Day Care is free in Tower Hamlets. The only
cost is for Refreshments and Lunch at a small charge of £3.35 per
day.

The Camden Society - Antill Road Day Centre (Adult learning
disabilities)
At Antill Road Centre you will get a choice of
activities to help you to become more independent, learn new
skills, get out in your community and meet new people. You
can develop your own programme to focus on:
Sports & Health: Try ice skating, track running, enjoy
hydrotherapy in a heated pool or reach for the sky in a trampoline
session.
Arts & Culture: Express yourself in
percussion, music and dance sessions, get inspired by visiting top
London galleries or relax and enjoy the latest films at your local
cinema.
Sensory: Get pampered in massage and
relaxation sessions or be dazzled by the bright lights of the
snoozelen
Community: Get stuck into a book at your local
library, find out about the history of London in a museum or
experience the buzz of local festivals and cultural events
Who is it for?
If you need high levels of support for getting around or
communicating with others, Antill Road Centre makes it easy to get
out and get involved. If you live in Tower Hamlets and are
into health, sports, arts and leisure, then this is the project for
you.
