Mind
in Tower Hamlets and Newham
Counselling service: The counselling services
at Mind in Tower Hamlets and Newham provide weekly individual
counselling. The sessions last 50 minutes and are an ideal
opportunity for you to focus on your issues in a safe and
confidential environment. The service adheres to BACP guidelines
for ethics and good practice in counselling and psychotherapy. We
operate a charge for our service which is as follows: £5 for
people on benefits, £10 for people working part-time, and £15 for
full time workers. If you would like to make a referral please
contact the counselling manager or counselling assessor on 020 7510
4248/7.
Welfare benefit advice:
Casework is provided on all welfare benefits, including
applications, advice on rights and obligations regarding benefits,
request reviews, reconsiderations, appeals for tribunals,
overpayment issues, local government issues (housing or council tax
benefit) , better-off calculations in case of income from
employment, social fund applications and reviews, communications
with DWP, Job Centre Plus and local councils, medical assessment
forms, working and child tax credit issues, representation for
debts under £5,000 and planned consolidation as well as advice on
debts over £5,000.
Mental health recovery and support
services: Supporting people with mental health issues to
towards recovery and remain well in the community. This
generic service provides intensive one to one support using the
recovery tool devised by Mental Health Providers Forum.
- Using the Recovery Star Support service users in crisis
and who need to be supported to access services in a more planned
way.
- To support service users who have severe and enduring
mental health issues and who lack awareness of the clinical
pathways into services.
- Casework and work in partnership with assertive outreach
Service, CMHT’s, THIES and the Dual diagnosis Team to engage with
service users to support and promote recovery in the hospital and
the community.
- Encourage service to access therapeutic/mental health
wellbeing activities available in Open House Mind in Tower hamlets
and Newham.
- To support people with complex needs who are linked to
the Assertive Outreach service, CMHTs, Dual diagnosis
services.
- Facilitate users’ access to relevant specialist services,
both in the community and in the hospital
- Offer support to people who are newly admitted to
services and who are not sure of the range of services open to
them.
- To support clients to access advocacy and counselling
services.
- Provide information to users, carers and the community
regarding mental health services and resources, treatment options
and aftercare; complimentary to that which statutory services are
bound to provide.
- Provide information to users on healthy living style,
e.g., healthy diet, exercises, stop smoking
Complementary support:
Traditional Chinese medical massage or acupuncture, homeopathy,
music therapy, art therapy. There is charge of £5 or £7 for Chinese
therapies. There may be a cost involved for homeopathic
remedies.
Social engagement: There are
Out of Hours services on Monday and Thursday evenings with
activities and support workers. A meal is normally prepared
together with users of the service. There is a separate regular
Sunday activity group, which often goes out to different activities
in and around the borough. A range of activities take place Monday
to Friday during the day at Open House, such as storytelling and
poetry group, photography group, cycling, badminton, and movement
therapy.
Independent advocacy: We
provide community and inpatient advocacy service for both clients
who are informal (Inclusive) and those who are detained under the
mental health act (IMHA). This service is available from
within the mental health service at Mile End Hospital and from our
main office at 13 Whitethorn Street.
Who is it for?
Our services are for people who live in Tower
Hamlets and Newham, who are 18+, and for people who have experience
of mental health and emotional issues.

What is the cost?
Many of our services are free at point of contact as we have a
contract in place. We are looking at the hourly costs for
services and these are currently under negotiation with the PCT –

Older People's Project St Hilda's East Community
Centre
Are you looking for a place you can:

We offer a full day service four days a week, including:
- Transport to and from your home in an accessible minibus
(subject to availability)
- Freshly cooked two-course lunch (salad, vegetarian,
diabetic, African-Caribbean, kosher & halal options
available)
- Morning seated keep-fit activities (Monday & Friday:
Keep Fit, Wednesday: Strength & Balance, Thursday:
Yoga)
- Computer classes (Thursday mornings)
- A varied programme of afternoon activities: (Art &
Craft, Singing, Quizzes, Bingo, Talks & discussions,

We can also offer a Personal Assistant service

Who is it for?
People over 60 with a personal budget. (At the
moment our service users are English-speaking, mainly of White
British, African-Caribbean or Irish origin).
To use our services

We will then ask for a copy of your assessment and support plan,
and will complete our own assessment (usually by a home visit)
before you start attending. This is to make sure that we can meet
your needs. You are welcome to visit St Hilda’s at any stage of
this process, to see if you would like to come regularly.
What is the cost?
Full day £40, Full day including
transport £50, Half day £20. In addition there is a cash
charge (currently £2.35) for the meal itself, payable on the
day.
There is also a cash charge for transport
& entrance tickets for outings and day trips.
Personal Assistant: £17.50 per hour.

Sonali Gardens Day Centre - St Hilda's East Community
Centre
We provide culturally appropriate social care
for service users suffering disabilities. The service users we
provide services for are from a predominantly Bangladeshi/Muslim
background though the service is open to users of all races/creeds.
The maximum number of users per day is forty. Amongst services we
provide are:
Personal care support for users who need
it(incontinence pad changes/catheter emptying/support with other
toileting needs). Support at meal times (taking meals to
table/providing support with the separating of fish bones/pouring
water etc). Making services accessible to users such as
dwp/opticians/dentists/chiropodists. Regular support with
prayers and pre prayer ablutions.
Hairdressing and massage services made
accessible. Exercise sessions that are catered to the needs of
disabled users.
Discussion based activities to encourage users
to speak out re their needs. Coalition work with outside
agencies such as safh(social action for health) to inform users on
ways to better manage their health and increase their independence.
Intergenerational work with local schools to increase
understanding between elders and younger generation.
Arts and crafts sessions. Music
sessions. Regular trips to parks/seaside etc.
Weekly shopping trips for users at numerous
shopping locations around the city. Freshly cooked meals
prepared for lunch and breakfast (lunches are culturally
appropriate curries cooked with minimum amounts of oil/salt and
spice).
Regular user forum meetings providing users
with an arena to discuss their opinions on services. Day Care
Manager and Service Co-ordinators operate an open door policy by
which users can discuss issues directly with management as and when
they arise if they should choose to do so. Joint work done
with projects such as ‘dignity’ to ensure that users are provided
with information on how to get help if they face abuse.
The centre is fully wheelchair
accessible. Staff speak
English/Bengali/Urdu. Door to door service for all
users via the centres transport services
Who is it for?
All adults who suffer from barriers to
achieving their social support needs.
To use our services
Users need to be referred through social
services.
1. The social worker will email/post the
referral papers
2. The co-ordinator/s will go over the paper work then visit
the potential user at home to see if the centre has the resources
to provide potential service user with support
3. If centre can accommodate the needs of the user then risk
assessments/support plans are drawn up for the user and they are
placed on appropriate transport runs /key workers are allocated
thereafter the service commences.
4. If the centre cannot accommodate the needs of the user then
the social worker is informed as to why this is. All efforts are
made to accommodate users referred.
All referrals are to sent for the attention of
the Co-ordinators (Sultana Akter / Anowar Salehin) or the Day Care
Manager (Enayet Sarwar).

Sundial
Centre
The Sundial Centre is a vibrant and welcoming
community centre offering an exciting range of activities, services
and events. We run a full timetable of activities, groups and
services ranging from keep fit, singing and bowls, through to arts
and crafts, computers and bingo. We also run events, health
and information services and projects, such as stopping smoking,
massage, financial information and parties! We are dedicated to
meeting the needs of the local community, with an emphasis on
services for people 50+ in our bright and spacious building.
Our popular Sundial Café is open to everyone 5
days a week 12 midday to 1.30pm serving delicious, good value,
freshly cooked food and our coffee bar is open for refreshments
from 10am to 3pm.
All of our members are encouraged to use our
full range of services, to get involved in decision making and we
welcome volunteers, young and old. As well as all our drop in
activities, we run a range of other projects, including: Day
care service for over-65s. LinkAge Plus: Group activities and
outreach to older people their homes (delivered by five
organisations across Tower Hamlets). Outreach support for isolated
older people. Learning zone, which provides employment advice,
training and qualifications

Most of our activities are aimed at people
over 50. Our Learning Zone is aimed at anyone over 18. We always
welcome younger adults to the centre and would love anyone to get

all we ask is for a short registration form when you first
arrive.

THFN – FRIENDS AND NEIGHBOURS
Befriending services, including:
- Regular home visits to provide support,
companionship and help with practical tasks
- Regular additional phone contact and support,
particularly at times of crisis
- Support with making appointments, accessing
services, benefits, etc
- Information provision and signposting to a
whole range of services
- Advocacy and enabling self-advocacy;
consultation and involvement
- Support in accessing health services and
hospital visits
We also provide, for clients receiving our
befriending services : escorted group outings, events, one-to-one
short trips, escorting to shops, etc, activities in people’s homes,
including reflexology, seated exercise
Who is it for?
Older people throughout the borough who are
socially isolated or lonely for any reason, housebound and/or frail
with mobility problems which make it difficult for them to get out
and about. We have befrienders who speak Bengali, Sylheti, Somali
and other community languages.
To use our services
Contact the office by telephone, post or email
(details below) and we will supply further information and a
referral form for completion. Referrals can be made by the service
user, a family member or friend, or by professionals, with the
service user’s consent. An initial call and visit will be made to
agree with the service user what services they would like which we
can provide.

All our Befriending services are FREE to
service users. There may be a charge for additional services such
as escorted outings.

Club
Provide regular weekly social clubs for people with learning
disabilities and family carers. Provide practical and emotional
