Market trader information
Tower Hamlets is at the heart of London’s street markets.
Customers and traders alike can choose from 10 local authority
managed markets as well as private markets in Brick Lane and
Spitalfields.
The task of market services is to regulate, develop and sustain
the street markets, and deal with illegal trading.
With 2,500 pitches to fill, the market service welcomes new
traders, both temporary and permanent. Traders start with a
temporary licence to give them freedom of choice as to market and
commodity until they get established.
A change to permanent status fixes the location in a market and
the commodity. In some markets becoming permanent can be almost
instant whilst others can take time before a permanent pitch
becomes free.
Benefits of being a permanent trader in Tower Hamlets
include:
- Lower weekday pitch charges
- The opportunity to employ a registered assistant to cover short
periods of daily business absence and four weeks holiday in a
year
