Muslim women's collective

The Muslim Women's Collective is committed to helping everyone
understand the importance of sustainability. Through practical,
culturally appropriate projects, the Collective is helping people
to adopt healthier, environmentally friendly lifestyles, especially
members of the Muslim community.
The Collective was established as an umbrella group in 2007 with
the support of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets and charity
London Sustainability Exchange.
What does the Collective do?
The Collective works together on common goals. It acts as a
forum to discuss the environmental, health, crime and anti-social
behaviour issues of concern in the Borough. It also supports Muslim
women’s groups to work together through coordinated projects to
make their communities cleaner, greener and safer.

At the launch of the Muslim Women’s Collective, 29th November
2007
Activities the Collective has delivered so far include:
- An environmental befriending scheme to help
Muslim women take advantage of services such as recycling
- Football coach training for Muslim women, with
an intention to expand this to swimming lifeguard
training
- The Muslim Women's Collective has recruited and trained twenty
four local women to carry out the independent surveys for the
London Borough of Tower Hamlets monitoring NI 195.
This involves assessing cleanliness performance in the
borough, for litter, detritus, graffiti and fly-posting, as a
member of the public would see it. All of the women are residents
of Tower Hamlets and are very enthusiastic about the work. For some
of them carrying out this work - they have now done a year's worth
of surveys - it has given them new transferable skills and an
opportunity to explore areas of the borough that they have not
previously ventured to. They are much more aware now of the impact
that waste, fly-posting and graffiti have on their neighbourhoods,
community and borough and are proud to be part of this Council
initiative.
How can I get involved?
We would love to hear from you:
- If you are a Muslim woman and are interested in taking up a
training opportunity or volunteering in any way
- If you represent a group that works with Muslim women in LB
Tower Hamlets
