Cultural Olympiad and Sports Programme
Cultural Olympiad
The London Games are not just about sport - they are an
opportunity to enjoy a major cultural celebration and inspire
people.
The
London 2012 Cultural Olympiad is a four year celebration designed
to encourage the widest range of people across the whole of the UK
to get involved in the London 2012 Games. This strong cultural
offer helped to secure London as the winning host city.
The Cultural Olympiad is centred on 3 values
which are; celebrating London and the whole of the UK welcoming the
world; inspiring and involving young people; and generating a
positive legacy - for example through cultural and sports
participation, cultural skills, capacity building, urban
regeneration, tourism and social cohesion.
It also has seven themes which are: bringing
together culture and sport; encouraging audiences to take part;
animating public spaces – through street arts, public art, circus
skills, live sites; using culture and sport to raise issues of
environmental sustainability, health and wellbeing; honouring and
sharing the values of the Olympic and Paralympic Games; encouraging
collaborations and innovation between communities and cultural
sectors; and enhancing the learning, skills and personal
development of young people by linking with education
programmes
Between now and 2012 there will be a host of
celebrations across Tower Hamlets, London and the wider UK to
celebrate our role as hosts for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
