European funding
European structural funds (ESF) are the main
tool for supporting social and economic cohesion across the
European Union (EU). They account for over one third of the EU
budget and are used to tackle regional inequalities and support
regional development
The European social fund (ESF) was set up to
improve employment opportunities in the EU, and it aims to help
people fulfil their potential by giving them better skills and
better jobs prospects.
The European regional development fund (ERDF) is used to tackle
regional disparities across Europe. ERDF supports regional
development through actions such as business innovation and support
and regeneration.
London's
2007 -2013 European programmes
London's structural funds are worth £517
million. This is made up of £142 million ERDF and £375 million
ESF.
Working on behalf of the Mayor of London, the
European programmes management unit (EPMU) at the London
Development Agency (LDA) is responsible for the administration of
the 2007 - 2013 programmes.
European regional development fund
The ERDF programme is monitored by
a committee, chaired by the Mayor of London.

Calls for applications will take place
periodically, throughout the period, and each call is likely to be
geared to a particular theme within the programme.
European social fund
For European social funds the EPMU works in
partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). The
DWP has the overall responsibility for ensuring the regional
frameworks meet the priorities and targets as set within the
national operational programme, the development and management of
London's ESF regional framework is carried out by the LDA.
London has four co-financing
organisations that are responsible for allocating these
funds, matched with 50 per cent of their own domestic funding
source, to provide 100 per cent support to projects that meet the
specified criteria of the London ESF regional framework.
