Gender equality
Our commitment is supported by a number of
legal duties that require us to promote equality and eliminate
discrimination.
The Gender Equality Duty came into force on
6th April 2007. The Duty requires public authorities to
take action to eliminate sexual discrimination and harassment and
to promote equality for men, women and transgender people.
The Duty is different from previous sex
equality legislation in two crucial aspects:
1. Public authorities have
to be proactive in eliminating discrimination and harassment,
rather than waiting for individuals to take out harassment
cases
2. Public authorities have to be proactive in
promoting equality of opportunity and not just avoiding
discrimination
As a local authority we also have specific
duty to prepare and publish a Gender Equality Scheme which shows
how we intend to fulfil the general and specific duties and sets
out our gender equality objectives.
