Race equality
Tower Hamlets is one of the most ethnically
diverse boroughs in the UK. The borough’s diversity is one its
greatest strengths. However, we also know that some communities,
particularly black and ethnic minority communities, tend to suffer
disproportionately from poverty, ill health, unemployment and
educational underachievement.
The Race
Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 (PDF 124k) places a
statutory duty on the Council to promote race equality. This
means that the Council, in the delivery of all functions and
services, must have due regard to:
- Eliminating unlawful racial discrimination
- Promoting equality of opportunity and
- Promoting good relations between people of different racial
groups.
The Tower Hamlets Diversity and Race Equality Scheme sets out
how the Council plans to meet these duties in order to promote race
equality. The three year scheme enables local people to see how the
council is working towards achieving equality in providing fair and
accessible services to those who are most disadvantaged.
The Council’s progress in implementing the
Diversity and Race Equality Scheme is reported annually in the
Diversity and Race Equality Scheme Annual Report and Diversity and
Race Equality Scheme Employment Monitoring Report.
