St Paul’s Way National Challenge Trust
St Paul’s Way Community School has made real
progress and standards are rising due to the hard work of students,
the new headteacher, staff, and the support of the local community
and Council. St Paul’s Way will also soon have a brand new school
building; over £35 million is being invested in the school to make
it one of the best equipped and most exciting places for young
people to learn in the whole of London.
The Council and the Interim Executive Board
(IEB) are currently managing the school and are committed to
raising standards to ensure that the school makes faster
progress.
National Challenge Programme
The government‘s ‘National Challenge’
programme was set up to make sure that at every school at least 30%
of pupils get 5 good GCSEs (which they define as grades A*-C, and
which must include English and maths). Schools that aren’t
achieving this yet – like St Paul’s Way - are part of the ‘National
Challenge Programme’. The programme means the school can get extra
funding and support from the government to improve standards.
Schools in the programme are also encouraged to strengthen their
governance – the way the school is run – and bring in partners to
help raise standards. One way of doing this is to become a
National Challenge Trust
School.
A National Challenge Trust
A National Challenge Trust school is a state
school funded through the Council. It has strong educational
partners who form the Trust. The Trust appoints the majority of the
school’s governors, holds the assets of the school, the school site
and buildings, employs the staff and decides the admissions policy.
There are rules about how they do all of these things.
If St Paul’s Way Community School were to
become a Trust school, it would receive up to £750,000 of
additional funding over three years. Full details of the
proposals are in the attached
document.
