Thank you to all 98 residents who took part in
You Decide! at Oxford House, Derbyshire Street on Saturday 7
March.
During the event participants heard about 33
extra council services and projects available to buy to
improve their neighbourhood and other residents’ lives.

Here’s how you decided
Participants voted on the best way to spend
the budget of £420,000 of council cash (£140,000 for each ward
Bethnal Green North, Mile End and Globe Town) to benefit their
local community.
Here are the extra council services and
projects participants wanted in the order they were voted for:
| Youth Inclusion Programme: This
programme will help to prevent 13-17 year olds from entering the
criminal justice system, by working with 75
teenagers |

| Early GCSE in Mother
Tongue: This will mean children
from the age of 11 can learn languages such as: Bengali, Arabic
Turkish, Chinese and Urdu and take their GCSE exam
early. |

| Youth Inclusion and Support Panel: The
panel will work with 30 children aged 8-13 who have become know to
the police or council’s youth offending team and may have
anti-social behaviour warnings or acceptable behaviour
contracts |

| Improvements to Meath Gardens: Specific
works would be subject to community consultation. The works may
include: railing and gate way repairs, painting, better signs,
littler bins, benches, footpath improvements, new play equipment,
tree and shrub planting, nature areas, water features, art features
or better lighting. |

| Family Learning 15,000 (20 week course):
Free family learning course will be organised by the councils life
long learning team to provide parents, grandparents and carers with
the skills they need to encourage their child to learn at
home. |

| Youth Disabilities Employment Project:
Tower Hamlets council will ensure two young people with
disabilities will be employed with council contractors or within
the Idea Store / Library Service. They will be supported by a
dedicated team. |

| Drug Outreach Worker (for 2 yrs): The
worker will be based in the community offering advice, support and
routes into drug rehabilitation
treatments. |

| Improved Street Lighting: This means
level of lighting will be improved. Trees will be cut back were
they block the light, lanterns will be cleaned and light bulbs
replaced before they fail. |

| Women’s Lifeguard Training Programme:
This programme will encourage women to train as life guards;
helping to increase access to swimming for women, and it is likely
to create jobs for women who complete the
training. |

| Extended Learning (Out of School Hours):
This will provide out of school study support to cover a
wide range of learning activities outside normal lesson time. Young
people can participate in this voluntarily. |

| Flashing Speed Reduction sign: Signs
will be placed on roads were actual or perceived speeding problems
exist |

| Shrub Beds (30 metres) Shrub Beds: This
project will provide 30meters of new and refurbished shrub beds in
parks and open spaces. It will include other, various bulbs, roses,
ground cover and climbing plants. |
