Active communities
The Tower Hamlets and Hackney active community sports
partnership began in 2001. It is a partnership between the two
councils and Sport England. Active communities with regards to
sport and physical activity is about those in society who find
sport more of a challenge and work to participate in whatever way
they wish.
The active community sports partnership is based in the London
borough of Tower Hamlets sports development unit, with office space
also in Hackney. The team works in all wards and neighbourhoods in
the two boroughs with voluntary and community organisations, sports
clubs and groups, local authority departments and schools governing
bodies of sport and individuals.
There are four main focus areas of the partnership:
Disability sports
It is our role to find funding for
local activities for disabled people. The
provision of long term opportunities for participation, which
we are addressing in partnership with others, is key to
including disabled people in mainstream society. Please visit the
disability sports page on this
site for further information.

Clubs, groups & organisations
We assist many with funding applications to do work locally.
Helping local organisations to increase their capacity is also
vital work. Many local people come together to organise
things in their community, helping them with their structure, the
rules they work to and setting up a bank account for the group are
all important areas for them to grow and progress.
Individual volunteers/coaches
Making it as easy as possible for local people to give their
time in sport and physical activity for the benefit of others is a
focus of ours. We provide advice, courses and guidance to
help people progress in their chosen area.
The aim is to provide good practice for all individuals working
in the area of sports and physical activity so they provide safe
and enjoyable activities for all people they work with. We
have four full-time and part-time admin support staff and in the
future subject to further funding, we expect this number to
increase.
