London and borough household projections
The number of households in Tower Hamlets is projected to
increase from 78,700 in 2001 by 70 per cent to 133,600 in 2021.
There were 3.15 to 3.20 million households in London in 2006.
Based on Greater London Authority (GLA) projections, London’s
population is expected to increase by 0.79 to 1.14 million between
2006 and 2026.
This growth in population could lead to an increase of 540,000
to 728,000 households over the next 20 years – a total of around
3.7 to 3.92 million.
The target numbers for additional homes in all London boroughs
comes from the GLA’s London Plan, with the target for additional
homes within Tower Hamlets at 31,000 between 2008-2017 or 3150 per
year.
The targets are set to meet housing need and demand in terms of
location, type of development and impact on the locality as set out
in the GLA’s Housing Capacity Study.
These figures deal with projected growth, not the existing
shortage of housing. According to the plan, the existing backlog in
housing need should be met over a 10 year period.
The GLA Housing Requirements Study estimated that for London the
net housing requirement arising from household population change
and historic unmet need was 353,500 homes over 10 years or 35,400
additional homes a year.
