An Elected Mayor in Tower
Hamlets
On
6 May, Tower Hamlets residents will be asked to vote in a referendum on
whether a Directly Elected Mayor will be introduced in the
borough - and before then, local people
have an opportunity to say how they would see an
Elected Mayor
working locally if the
referendum results in
a ‘Yes’ vote.
By law, the council must sound out local
people’s views on different possible working arrangements ahead of
the May vote. We consulted residents on the scope of powers
given to the new Mayor, as opposed to decisions which would require
the backing of the full council.
Other issues included in the consultation
were:
- whether existing arrangements to scrutinise
decisions should continue under a Mayor;
- whether purely ceremonial duties should
continue to be undertaken by a separate councillor rather
than taken over by any
new Elected Mayor;
- and what sort of decisions should be
delegated to cabinet members, committees and council
officials.
More information:
The consultation is now closed. The
referendum on whether to have a Directly Elected Mayor in Tower
Hamlets will take place on 6 May, at the same time as the local
elections.
