Tribute to survivors
By Eloise Clarke
18 January
An exhibition about the Rwandan genocide
and the country today kicked off a programme of free events to mark
this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day.
Heroes of our Time is presented by the
survivors of the genocide in 1994 at Oxford House in Derbyshire
Street, Bethnal Green.
Holocaust Memorial Day is on
27 January and this year marks the 65th anniversary of the
liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp.
The HMD Trust is challenging people to
become part of the Legacy of Hope, the theme for this year’s
events.
As part of the Legacy for Hope, a
critically acclaimed multimedia play – And Then They Came For Me –
will be performed at Brady Arts Centre in Whitechapel on Monday, 25
January.
The play weaves compelling videotaped
interviews of Holocaust survivors Eva Schloss and Ed Silverberg
with live actors recreating scenes from World War II.
The performance starts at 7pm, with
refreshments available from 6pm. Ms Schloss will host a Q&A
session after the performance, followed by a candlelit
ceremony.
To reserve a seat phone 7364 7900 or email
festivalsandevent@towerhamlets.gov.uk.
A collection of books around the Legacy of
Hope theme is available for free loan all this month and these are
available from all participating Idea Stores and libraries.
A Jewish history walk led by East End
expert and registered Corporation of London walking guide Clive
Bettington will take place on Sunday, 31 January starting at
Aldgate Tube at 10 am.
The Heroes of Our Time exhibition is open
until 29 January, 9.30am-10pm Monday to Friday and 10am-2pm
Saturdays.
