This week the country is looking ahead to
July 27, 2012 when more than 10,000 athletes representing 200
nations from around the globe will converge on east London for the
Olympic Games.
With just two years to go until the eyes of
the world are upon Tower Hamlets and the other four host boroughs,
the main venues – Olympic stadium, velodrome, aquatic centre,
Olympic village and broadcast centre – are already East End
landmarks.
Council leader Cllr Helal Abbas said: “In
two years’ time we’ll be embarking on a fantastic journey as we
showcase Tower Hamlets at the most amazing sporting event on
earth.
“Millions of visitors, athletes and
officials will be staying in the borough or passing through it as
they enjoy London 2012. The excitement and atmosphere that will
embrace the borough come Games time is unimaginable and will be a
once in a lifetime experience for residents.”
Cllr Abbas added: “Tower Hamlets residents
might be thinking what is in it for them when the majority of the
work is taking place in Stratford – but with improved transport
links, state-of-the-art sport venues, additional housing and more
jobs, just a stone’s throw away, the Olympics brings lasting
improvements to the borough.”
Along with the Olympic Park, which will
benefit Tower Hamlets residents for years to come, the Games sees
the development of High Street 2012.
This major thoroughfare, which runs through
the heart of the borough, is the focus of a major regeneration
project that will see improvements to buildings and Whitechapel
Market.
Victoria Park is set to play host to
cultural events throughout the Games to help residents immerse
themselves in the Olympic spirit.
The park is also due for a £12 million
makeover.
The Olympics offers volunteering and job
opportunities, guided tours of the site and fans can already sign
up for tickets. Call 0845 267 2012 or visit www.london2012.com.
