Steel statues unveiled in Mile End Park
August 22, 2011
Cyclists and walkers can enjoy new works of art
along the canal in Mile End Park.
Sustrans, the charity that encourages people
to walk, cycle or use public transport more frequently, unveiled a
bench and three steel statues.
The statues are of Tottenham Hotspur and
England footballer Ledley King, suffragette Sylvia Pankhurst and a
towpath horse.
Ledley joined Mayor Lutfur Rahman, Jim
Fitzpatrick MP and Susan Homewood, of the Sylvia Pankhurst Trust,
at the unveiling.
Ledley said: “As a young kid growing up I
never expected to have statues put up of me in the area, so I’m
honoured.
“Hopefully the statue can inspire some boys
and girls to reach their dreams.
“To be recognised for any achievement is a
privilege and is especially welcome when it is something determined
by people of the area in which you were born.”
