Joint statement from mayor of Tower Hamlets and the borough
commander (September 1)
With all marches banned in Tower Hamlets and other parts of
London for 30 days from Friday, September 2, the EDL’s
proposed march on Saturday, September 3 will not be
going ahead.
Residents are therefore advised that Tower
Hamlets will be business as usual at the weekend with shops,
markets and other businesses remaining open. And whilst the council
is thankful for the support it has received in its efforts to get
the EDL march banned, the mayor of Tower Hamlets is urging anyone
planning to come to the borough to protest against the EDL to stay
away.
Lutfur Rahman, Mayor of Tower Hamlets said:
“The support from our community and also people from right across
the country has been fantastic, and has helped to make sure the EDL
is unable to march through our borough with their messages of hate
this weekend.
"With the EDL march now banned, I call on
people not to support any initiatives designed to force
confrontation by attempting to defy the ban on all marches. We are
a united, peaceful borough, and this weekend is a great opportunity
to show just that.”
Borough Commander Paul Rickett said: “The
police totally understand the strength of feeling in the community
about the EDL.
"There is a substantial policing operation in
place and we have confidence in our ability to keep the
residents of Tower Hamlets safe.”
