Festive fun for all at Roman Road Market
This month, Roman Road punters can enjoy music and
entertainment as they shop for bargains in the run up to
Christmas.
Roller skating elves, comedians and
musiciansare just some of the acts Tower Hamlets Council has lined
up to entertain shoppers every Saturday in December, from 11am to
3pm.
On Saturday, December 1, actor Gary Lucy
kicked off the festive period by switching on the lights of a 22
feet Christmas tree installed on Gladstone Place.
He was joined by a juggling snowman, a one man
band, a town crier and entertainers who sprinkled the crowd in
fairy dust to get them into the festive spirit.
Mayor Lutfur Rahman said: “Our markets are a
great place for residents looking for bargains – not just at
Christmas but all year round – and we want to celebrate our markets
by getting people together to join in the festive fun.”
Deputy Mayor, Cllr Ohid Ahmed, said: “We have some excellent markets in Tower
Hamlets and each one has its own distinct character.
“With lots going on this month, December is
the perfect time for people to head down to their local market to
find out what’s on offer.”
Roman Road Market has seen some changes in
recent weeks, following involvement from retail expert Mary Portas
and a successful funding bid led by NHS Tower Hamlets in
partnership with the council.
Visitors to the area can now enjoy hot food in
Ewert Place and at a designated food court whichis being trialled
until February 2013, at which point it will be reviewed.
The food court also includes a new bakery stall.
Shoppers using cars have the added bonus of two hours free
parking on Saturdays on the roads around the market and at the car
park at the junction of Roman Road and St Stephen’s Road.
