Building schools for the future scheme enters fourth
and final wave
Tower Hamlets’ Building Schools for the Future
(BSF) programme continues to go from strength to strength, with the
fourth and final wave of improvements scheduled to start this
spring.
Delivered by Tower Hamlets Council with building partners
Bouygues UK, this final wave will see another £55 million invested
into the schools to create top class educational facilities.
The schools benefiting from this wave will be Beatrice Tate
special educational needs school, Bow School and George Green’s
School on the Isle of Dogs. Beatrice Tate is the first scheduled
for completion by the autumn term 2013. Bow School is scheduled for
completion in August 2014 and George Green’s is scheduled for
completion March 2016.
Mayor Lutfur Rahman, Tower Hamlets Council, who last year opened
St Paul’s Way Trust School, the borough’s first rebuilt school
through the BSF programme, said: “Improving educational attainment
is my priority. We have had fantastic A-Level and record high GCSE
results, and the BSF programme will continue to help the borough’s
young people reach their potential.”
Mayor Rahman, added: “Building Schools for the Future is not
just about bricks and mortar, it is about the young people who will
experience life-changing benefits from this investment.
He added: “These better teaching facilities will further improve
the quality of education in our borough and help inspire Tower
Hamlets’ students to attain even greater heights for generations to
come.”
Bouygues’ commitment to education is not limited to the schools
they build and their immediate stakeholders, but extends to the
wider community.
Chairman of Bouygues UK & Warings, Madani Sow said: To have
reached batch four of this successful school regeneration programme
in Tower Hamlets is a great achievement and we continue to be proud
of our involvement.
“We approach our work with the intention of bringing the
additional values of local economic and social benefits. As
well as supporting local issues, investment has been channelled
into work based learning such as apprenticeships and a Business
Language Champions scheme, maximising development opportunities for
young people in Tower Hamlets.”
Bouygues UK has extensive education experience having completed
36 new and refurbished school buildings in five of London’s
boroughs and beyond over the past six years, with a further 14
currently under construction or yet to commence.
This final wave brings the number of schools in the borough
benefiting from the £300 million government-funded regeneration
programme in Tower Hamlets to 17. The programme includes new
buildings, major refurbishment, and ICT investment.
The improved facilities will provide learning environments for
children and young people as well as enable the schools to enhance
their ability to deliver their learning specialisms.
Secondary schools provide a major resource for local communities
and these new and refurbished facilities are being designed for
shared community use wherever appropriate, such as sports,
libraries, nurseries and ICT suites – placing schools at the heart
of the community.
