Poplar Baths on the road to
restoration
Plans to re-open Poplar Baths moved a step
closer this month as Tower Hamlets Council starts the process
towards appointing a development partner.
The Grade II listed building is set to be
restored to include a swimming pool and sports hall.
Mayor Lutfur Rahman, said: “The restoration of
Poplar Baths is close to my heart. I am delighted that we have
moved a step closer to returning this local landmark to the
community and will be providing residents in the east of the
borough with a much needed swimming facility.
”I acknowledge the work of local
campaigners such as the Poplar Baths
Steering Group chaired by Lilian Collins who worked
tirelessly to re-open Poplar Baths."
Up to £500,000 has been set aside to support
the restoration and procurement process to secure a development
partner. A separate development partner may also be sought to
maximise the housing potential of the site in addition to the
swimming and leisure element.
Originally opened in 1852 having cost just
over £10,000, the baths continued to be used as a swimming facility
until 1988, after which it was closed and turned into an industrial
training centre.
The council will look to appoint a development
partner for the restoration of Poplar Baths over the coming
months. Advertisements will be placed shortly.
