London Live Victoria Park
Victoria Park, Tower Hamlets, will be transformed
next summer to offer thousands of residents the chance to join in
the excitement of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games –
for free.
The park will be joined by two other open-air locations in the
capital – Hyde Park and Trafalgar Square – to create London Live.
The 17-day sporting extravaganza in Victoria Park will boost local
business, while providing residents with access to 4,000 tickets,
which have been secured by the borough for each day of
activity.
Created by the mayor of Tower Hamlets, the mayor of London, The
Royal Parks, and international event promoters Live Nation, London
Live will enable people to watch outdoor screenings of the 2012
sporting action and enjoy top flight entertainment for free.
Taking place between July 27 and August 12, London Live Victoria
Park includes two giant screens to show the best of the Olympic
Games.
In addition aspiring sports stars of the future and those who
just want to have a go will also be able to try their hand at a
number of Olympic and Paralympic sports at the London Live Sports
Park.
Attractions will include music performances, a 40ft observation
wheel, a double zipline and water-zorbing.
Mayor Lutfur Rahman said: “I want the people of Tower Hamlets to
have the chance to experience the Olympic Games.
“The eyes of the world will be on east London and I want to make
the best of it for Tower Hamlets.”
In February the mayor signed an agreement with the London
Olympics organising committee (LOCOG) providing job opportunities,
investment, Curry Capital 2012 and Olympic tickets for local
people.
Subject to contract during 2012, Victoria Park will host no more
than five commercial events in addition to London Live - this
compares with the nine commercial events held in 2011. This
reduction recognises the need to balance accessibility for
residents with the need to raise revenue for the park.
The five commercial events will help provide much-needed income
for free-to-access events and the upkeep of the park.
Full details will be announced shortly and people can register
their interest on the official website at http://www.londonlive.uk.com.
