Footballers are being invited to make their clubs and the borough proud as registration for the Tower Hamlets’ prestigious annual football tournament kicks off.

The Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs is inviting local football teams to apply to take part in the Mayor’s Cup 2018. But hurry, the deadline for applications is 20 August.

The council’s sports and physical activity team will again be hosting all aspects of the tournament, with the support of key partners and sponsors.

Principally for Tower Hamlets based clubs, the tournament will welcome applications from neighbouring boroughs in the junior and youth categories. If there is a shortfall of applicants from Tower Hamlets.

The council is committed to supporting girl’s participation in sport and players will be accepted up to 16 year olds in mixed gender teams, in line with FA rules.

Proceeds from the annual tournament go towards promoting engagement in and access to grassroots football. 

Mayor of Tower Hamlets John Biggs said: “Tower Hamlets has a long and diverse footballing history and the Mayor’s Cup is a great opportunity to bring people of all ages and backgrounds together to support grassroots football. It encourages young people to take part in active and healthy competition and I am delighted to support the Cup again this year.”

Cllr Amina Ali, Cabinet Member for Culture, the Arts and Brexit, added: “I encourage football players of all ages to use the passion ignited from the World Cup to register for the Mayor’s cup. Your team could have a star in your midst; I hope this tournament will spur them on.”

Youth (under 13’s, 14’s and 16’s) and adults, both male and female heat stages will be held on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 September, at Victoria Park

Junior heat stages and finals will be held on Saturday 8 September, at Mile End Stadium.

Youth and adult finals will take place on Sunday 9 September at Mile End Stadium.
