Improved GCSE results in Tower Hamlets

Students in Tower Hamlets achieved great success in their GCSE results with improvements across all the key measures.

85 per cent of Tower Hamlets students achieved grades 9-4 in English, equivalent to the old A to C grades, (an improvement of three per cent on 2018), while in maths 74 per cent of students achieved grades 9-4, up four per cent on the comparable figure last year.

Councillor Danny Hassell, Cabinet Member for Children Schools and Young People visited Oaklands school in Bethnal Green where 74 per cent of students achieved maths and English grades 9-4 (equivalent to the old A* to C grades).

Cllr Hassell said: “I’m pleased to see a great set of results across the borough for GCSEs, demonstrating the progress that our schools continue to make.  I congratulate all young people on their hard earned results today and thank our excellent teachers for their work in helping our young people achieve their goals."

 

Notable individual successes at Oaklands school

Carla Scortinschi said: “I’m overwhelmed and very pleased. I got five grade 6s and a grade 7 which has enabled me to go on to study A levels in history, government and politics and geography.  I’m grateful to the teachers who worked really hard with me.”

Eman Sayed achieved five grade 8s and a 7 in maths and said: “I’m grateful to my teachers and very pleased with my results. I now want to study physics, maths, further maths and geography at A level and then to study astrophysics at university. I’m really pleased!”

Naasir Osman achieved eight GCSE passes in his chosen subjects and is now planning to take A levels in maths, chemistry and physics. Naasir said: "I’m really pleased with these results and my future is looking really positive."
