The Tower Hamlets Youth Orchestra recently performed for hundreds of people on their summer tour of Germany.

Forty two young musicians, aged between 12 and 20 toured some of the most prestigious classical music venues in the country performing for 650 people at Brandenburg Cathedral and to 200 people at St Pauli Ruine, a church bombed in the war but rebuilt to become an art venue.

John Biggs, Mayor of Tower Hamlets said: “I congratulate THAMES for a successful tour. This is a real achievement for the young people of Tower Hamlets and shows the wealth of talent that we have in the borough.”

The tour to Germany is the orchestra’s first outside the UK and a suitable celebration of a 3-year programme of significant development under the conductor Phillip Scott alongside an experienced panel of instrumental tutors.

The tour included four performances and sightseeing/exploring in between. The reportoire included Finlandia by Sibelius; Danse Macabre by Sant Saens; and Movements from the Firebird by Stravinsky.

Councillor Danny Hassell, Cabinet member for Children, Schools and Young People said: “The Tower Hamlets Youth Orchestra makes a great contribution to the cultural life of the borough. I’m proud that our young people had the opportunity to play in such prestigious venues and would encourage any other aspiring musicians to get involved with the orchestra.”

The Tower Hamlets Youth Orchestra is run by Tower Hamlets Arts & Music Education Service (THAMES) which is the lead organisation for the Music Education Hub in both Tower Hamlets and the City of London.

Working closely with all schools, THAMES provides regular quality music and arts education opportunities for all children and young people in both Tower Hamlets and the City. THAMES also works in partnership with local and national arts organisations to offer schools the best opportunities for enhancing their curriculum work.

The Tower Hamlets Youth Orchestra features many of the most experienced young musicians in Tower Hamlets. This orchestra, now in its sixth year, play ambitious music in a variety of styles providing just the right level of challenge.

Many of the members of this ensemble now attend music lessons at various London conservatoires, and are taking the highest grade exams on their instrument. THYO have particularly enjoyed learning and performing repertoire from the twentieth century, and much of the music they play today is from this era.

Young players can apply to join the Youth Orchestra by contacting the THAMES  office at thames.admin@towerhamlets.gov.uk.
