The London Fire Brigade was called to reports of a large fire at a block of flats in Hadleigh Close in Bethnal Green at 3.28am.
More than 100 residents were evacuated with one man taken to hospital as a precaution.
Council officers were soon at the scene to provide support for residents. They worked with Tower Hamlets Homes and the Bancroft Tenant Management Cooperative to identify and make contact with all occupants.
Hotel rooms have been arranged for households in need of alternative accommodation. Others are being assisted by family and friends nearby but support remains available for them if their circumstances change.
Residents affected by the fire who need further assistance should call on 020 7265 8343 in the first instance. In addition, the Bancroft TMC office at 12 Wickford Street is open and staffed.
The main Tower Hamlets Homes contact centre is also available during office hours on 020 7365 5015 should it be required.
Tower Hamlets Council would like to pay tribute to the London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Service and the Metropolitan Police for their swift response and for their support to our residents at this difficult time.
