Cllr Kabir Ahmed
Following the by-election on Thursday 12 August, Kabir Ahmed of Aspire has been elected to serve as a councillor on Tower Hamlets Council for the Weavers Ward.
Residents were able to cast their votes for a new councillor to represent them after the sad passing of Cllr John Pierce in June.
There were six candidates who contested for the role
Cllr Ahmed said: “I would like to thank the people of Weavers ward for electing me and I promise to work tirelessly for them on the issues that matter most to them.”
Three polling places were opened from 7am to 10pm and there was a police presence at each polling station to safeguard the integrity of the election.
Cllr Ahmed received 1204 votes out of the total 2607 votes cast.
There were 9,341 eligible voters and the turnout for the by-election was 27.91 per cent.
Following the close of poll at 10pm, the secured ballot boxes were taken to Tower Hamlets Town Hall at Mulberry Place for the count and declaration of the result. 905 postal votes were received for the by-election.
The declaration was made just after midnight by Will Tuckley, Returning Officer and Chief Executive for Tower Hamlets Council.
Will Tuckley said: “This by-election was held in sad circumstances. John Pierce was passionate about Weavers ward and improving life for residents, including strong advocacy over anti-social behaviour.
"I would like to thank all those residents who took the time to vote and to thank our staff, and everyone involved in organising the by-election for all their hard work which has resulted in another successful election.”
The declaration of results for Weavers including a breakdown by candidate can be found on the council’s website.
Cllr Ahmed joins Cllr Abdul Mukit as the ward councillors for Weavers.
