The new Mulberry Wood Wharf school near Canary Wharf
The Secretary of State for Education has appointed Mulberry Schools Trust as the sponsor of a new Primary Free School at Wood Wharf in Canary Wharf, Tower Hamlets.
The new school, called Mulberry Wood Wharf, will open in September 2022 and is accepting applications until 15 January 2022.
The competition for the selection of the academy sponsor followed a fair and transparent process in accordance with free school presumption guidance, brought in with the Education Act 2011.
Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs, said:
“We firmly believe in giving every chance for every child to get the best start in life. It’s great to have a brand-new school opening in an area where there has been considerable residential development recently.
“We have incredible schools in Tower Hamlets that achieve very strong results, and I look forward to our family of schools growing with this new school in Wood Wharf.”
Councillor Asma Begum, Cabinet Member for Children, Youth Services, Education and Equalities, said:
“The opening of a new school is always very special, bringing with it state-of-the-art facilities and more choice for our families. As a council we work very closely with our schools, and I know that Mulberry Wood Wharf will be a real asset for the residents of Wood Wharf and beyond.”
Chief Executive of the Mulberry Schools Trust, Dr Vanessa Ogden, said:
“We are delighted to gain approval from the Secretary of State to sponsor the new primary Free School in Wood Wharf. This exciting news will lead to new opportunities for local families that embraces an innovative, engaging and outstanding provision with the simple aim of enabling every child who attends to flourish in everything that they do. Excellence is interwoven within our principles of inclusion, diversity and equality of opportunity. We are completely committed to providing a first-class education for all our children, in partnership with local schools, our community and the local authority.”
Mulberry Wood Wharf primary will be a two-form entry primary school, mainly serving families in the new Wood Wharf housing development where over 3,000 new homes have been built, and the surrounding area.
The new school will ensure the council meets it duty to provide sufficient school places in areas of the borough experiencing new housing and therefore population growth.
Parents of children starting the reception year of primary school in September 2022 can apply for places at the new school via eAdmissions.

Free school presumption
This applies to academies and free schools. It describes the process for establishing new schools under the ‘free school presumption’. The Education Act 2011 changed the arrangements for establishing new schools and introduced section 6A, which is known as the academy or free school presumption.
