Commander John Ludgate
Do you know an outstanding person or organisation that has given years of dedicated service to Tower Hamlets and deserves to receive the borough’s highest honour?
The Speaker of the Council is delighted to announce that nominations for the Freedom of the Borough are now open, and applications are being welcomed until 31 July 2021.
The Freedom of the Borough is awarded very rarely and only to exceptional candidates, so the decision to give the award is only taken after careful consideration.
The award was last made in 2018 to Commander John Ludgate (Retd.), who served as the Deputy Lieutenant for Tower Hamlets for 22 years. His duties included overseeing royal visits in the borough, advising the Mayor, Speaker and councillors on protocol and engagement with the royals and validating awards such as the Queen’s Award for Enterprise and Voluntary Service.
The nominations will be considered by a cross-party panel chaired by the Speaker, Councillor Mohammed Ahbab Hossain, who said:
“I am very happy that there will once again be an opportunity for exceptional people and organisations in Tower Hamlets to be recognised for their achievements. It is a real and rare honour to be awarded the Freedom of the Borough and I look forward to congratulating the next recipients later in the year.”
The panel is keen to hear from people or communities who may not have considered making an application previously, and is looking forward to receiving nominations that reflect the rich diversity of the borough.
Visit www.towerhamlets.gov.uk/freedomoftheborough to make your nomination and you can work with an organisation to complete the form.
Please make sure to read the guidance notes carefully and you can email email@example.com if you have any questions.
An announcement confirming the outcome of the nominations will be made later in the year.
