Residents have a go at Bollywood dancing

More than 100 residents joined in a fun day to thank volunteers for their hard work during the pandemic and to let their hair down.

Neighbours in Poplar hosted the celebration at St Matthias Community Centre, thanks to funding from the Mayor’s Covid Recovery Fund.

The Mayor’s Covid Recovery Fund is a £3 million scheme aimed at kickstarting the borough’s economic, health and social recovery from Covid-19. The money will be used to support residents, businesses and the work of community organisations recover from the impact of the pandemic

This was the second celebration event Neigbours in Poplar had organised pecifically for volunteers.

Entertainment was provided by a Bollywood dance troupe, Pearly King and Queen and a singer who blasted out hits from the 1960s.

Mandy Molyneux, from Neighbours in Poplar said: “It was a fantastic event and we have had great feedback from residents. Residents were happy to attend a large event where they could socialise and have fun as the lockdown was difficult for many who became quite isolated as they lived by themselves.

It was lovely to see so many of our regulars at the fun day and we are delighted to be able to serve the community now restrictions have been lifted.”
