Flytipped waste on street

An online retailer that sold fashion items on websites, like Amazon and eBay, out of a basement in Spitalfields, has been ordered to pay fines totaling £7,190 by the courts for illegally dumping waste in the street on multiple occasions.

Diffusion Fashion, which recently moved from Fashion Street, E1, to the West Midlands, was ordered by Thames Magistrates Court to pay fines, including £1,000 for the first offence, £2,000 for the second offense, court costs of £4,000, and a victim surcharge of £190, which is all due to be paid by August.

The retailer was issued two Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN) for dumping a variety of waste in the street, including black refuse sacks and carboard boxes that the address labels removed in a bid to hide any identifying details. Despite being reminded multiple times to pay the FPNs the company failed to do so and was prosecuted.

Lutfur Rahman, Mayor of Tower Hamlets, said:

“Our borough needs to be a clean and safe place for all our residents to enjoy. We are waging war on businesses that dump their waste in the streets, putting our residents at risk and dirtying our streets and parks.

“All businesses in Tower Hamlets are required to have an ongoing contract with a registered waste carrier to ensure they are disposing of their waste properly. It is essential that businesses take responsibility and take care of the areas around their properties.

“Thanks to the diligence of our Environmental Services Officer and their thorough investigation we have secured this conviction. I hope it sends a strong message that we will seek to prosecute fly-tippers who dump waste in Tower Hamlets.”

Businesses can get in touch with the commercial waste team at Tower Hamlets if they have any queries about waste or would like to enquire about the council’s commercial waste service: www.towerhamlets.gov.uk/commercialwaste
