More than £5,000 worth of illegal nicotine and vape products have been seized from a shop in a joint police and Trading Standards operation.

Tower Hamlets Council received a number of complaints from residents about Cloudz Vapez, in Roman Road, due to anti-social behaviour (ASB), noise nuisance, drug dealing and large numbers of intimidating groups gathering outside.

There were also reports the shop was selling illegal products over the counter, such as trademark and counterfeit vapes and vapes that breach the current legal nicotine limit.

Trading Standards and Met Police raided the premises and seized 320 illegal nicotine and vape related products, with an estimated value of more than £5,000.

The shop owner originally refused to give officers his details, but they were able to track them down via the Met database.

The shop owner has been cautioned by Trading Standards and will now be thoroughly investigated.

Councillor Kabir Hussain, Lead Member for Environment and Climate, said:

“There are real dangers associated with shops selling counterfeit vape products, as they can contain harmful substances mixed with the nicotine.

“Some of the vapes being sold also had higher levels of nicotine than is allowed in the UK which is dangerous to those who use them.

“As the vapes are sold cheaply, they appeal to youngsters and encourage them to take up these habits which can have lifelong impacts on their health and wellbeing.

“During the raid, members of the public were approaching officers, passing on gratitude and appreciation for the proactive work that they were doing.

“Hopefully, this operation has sent a strong message to the shop owner and anyone else selling illicit products and encouraging ASB that this will not be tolerated within our wards.

“This is a prime example of the importance of understanding local issues and the power of partnership working.”
