State funeral bank holiday: some council services affected

Monday, 19 September 2022 will be a bank holiday to mark the State Funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. 

Some council services will be closed or will operate at a reduced capacity. 

Adult Social Care 

An out-of-hours service will be operating and can be contacted via 020 7364 4079.  

Bin collections 

Waste and recycling collections are still taking place on Monday 19 September. Crews will begin work early and finish most collections before the State Funeral begins. Some services will resume in the afternoon. 

Books of condolence 

Books of Condolence are available to be signed in person at Mulberry Place, Whitechapel Idea Store and St George’s Hall until 5pm on Tuesday 20 September. These buildings will however be closed on Monday 19 September. An online Book of Condolence can be signed by visiting www.royal.uk

Children and Family Centres 

Children and Family Centres will be closed. 

Customer Contact Centre 

The Customer Contact Centre will be closed on Monday 19 September with lines reopening the next day.   

Council offices 

Our offices will be closed on Monday 19 September 2022. Some services will be operating an out of hours service. 

GP practices 

GP practices in north east London will be closed on Monday 19 September for the national bank holiday. If you are feeling unwell and need urgent help there are a number of other options for you to consider including out of hours GP appointments, pharmacy and 111. 

Housing repairs 

Tower Hamlets Homes is providing an emergency only phone service from 5pm on Friday 16 September until 8:30am Tuesday 20 September. If you have an emergency, please phone their repairs helpline on 020 7364 5015 or 0800 376 1637. Repairs that are not emergencies can be reported online at my.thh.org.uk. 

Libraries, Idea Stores, Archives 

Will be closed on Monday 19 September. 

Leisure Centres 

Leisure centres, venues and spas managed by Better will be closed on Monday 19 September. Normal service will resume on Tuesday 20 September. 


Traders will still be able to trade at markets usually open on a Monday, if they choose to open their stalls. 

The Reuse and Recycling Centre  

The Reuse and Recycling Centre (RRC) will be closed all day on Monday. 


The service will be closed but will be operating an out of hours service for urgent burials. Call 020 7364 7880


All schools in Tower Hamlets will be closed. 

Careers Young Workpath 

This service will be closed and will resume business on Tuesday as usual.
