The Amalgamation of Bishop Challoner Catholic Girls’ and Boys’ Schools
On 29 March 2023, the Council Cabinet took the decision to agree the amalgamation (merger) of Bishop Challoner Catholic Girls’ and Boys’ Schools, to create Bishop Challoner Co-educational Catholic School for 11–18-year-olds.
The council will now implement its arrangements for the schools’ merger to take effect from 1 September 2023. This process will begin on the expiry of five working days following this notice.
Dated 31 March 2023
A statutory notice has now been issued on proposals concerning the proposed amalgamation of The Bishop Challoner Catholic Federation Boys’ and Girls’ Schools. This follows a decision by the Mayor of Tower Hamlets in Cabinet on 30 November 2022 to approve a report recommending that a further (statutory) consultation is published about the proposed amalgamation. This means that the proposal is now being progressed to the next stage with the four-week representation period taking place from Monday 16 January until Monday 13 February 2023.
The statutory notice, along with full details of the proposals, can be found on the consultation page.
Comments and objections can be made:
- by filling in the online survey on the consultation page
- by email: school.organisation@towerhamlets.gov.uk
- or by post: School Organisation and Place Planning Manager, Pupil Services and School Sufficiency, Tower Hamlets Children and Culture, Town Hall, Mulberry Place, 5 Clove Crescent, E14 5BG.
These will be collated and considered as part of a report that will go to the council’s Cabinet on 29 March 2023 for a final decision. Closing date for responses is 5pm, Monday 13 February 2023.
A First Stage consultation with pupils, parents and staff at both schools took place in Autumn 2022. A consultation document was prepared and was given to all parents and staff, circulated to Tower Hamlets Headteachers, emailed to trade unions and governors, circulated to other stakeholders, and the Secretary of State has been notified of potential changes. Information about the consultation was also placed on the school website. Parents and staff have been sent regular updates about the proposal and meetings they can attend to express their views. Details of the responses received are detailed in the Statutory Notice document on the consultation page.
