Join Bengali storyteller Shamim Azad, local musician Paul Burgess and the Swadhinata Trust as they transport us back in time using storytelling and music to platform the experiences of local Bengali communities in the 1970s (both in the East End and on the Asian continent) that shape British Bengali heritage.  

Working in partnership with Swadhinata Trust and Tower Hamlets Local Library and Archives, Toynbee Hall is delighted to invite you to this exciting performative walking tour where together, we will visit significant sites relevant to this history including Altab Ali Park, Janamot and Kobi Nazrul Centre.

Meeting: 10:45am for a prompt 11am start outside Toynbee Hall, 28 Commercial St, London E1 6LS

The walking tour will visit 5 locations in the local area and last approximately 2 hours (with rest stops),  finishing back at Toynbee Hall.

Accessibility:

The tour will pass a main road and several smaller roads. Volunteer Stewards will be on hand to support and guide the participants. Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. We will go at the a gentle pace – no-one will be left behind.

Dress Code: In honour of the 50th anniversary of Bangladeshi independence, we ask participants to dress in green and red.  However, as this is an activity that includes walking, please wear appropriate and comfortable footwear. You may wish to bring a bottle of water and a packed lunch/snacks.
