A painting of Poplar Councillors and their supporters in 1921

The Hale Street mural commemorates the Poplar Rates Rebellion in 1921, when 30 Poplar Labour councillors were imprisoned for refusing to collect taxes people couldn’t afford to pay.

Please join us on Saturday 4 September, from 3pm at Poplar Recreation Ground, E14 to celebrate the mural restoration in this centenary year of the rebellion.

Bring a picnic blanket and enjoy a performance from Grand Union Orchestra, speeches and drop-in art workshops with mural restoration artist David Bratby.

Visit the mural on Hale street and find out more about the rebellion.

Free entry.
