Grand Union Orchestra

Join Grand Union Orchestra’s informal, relaxed gatherings to launch the Song of Africa project! You are invited to bring your stories, music and songs, and talk about your experience or learn about different countries of African heritage and their culture.

Much-loved Grand Union musicians of African heritage will lead the programme, all of whom are celebrated exponents of their art and perfectly placed to tell stories of migration through drumming and chant, Latin American and Caribbean music, and jazz.

Creative workshop sessions open to all young musicians aged 12-21 of any cultural background, and playing any instrument, whether Western or global.

Focussing on particularly on North Africa and Central Africa as well as West and Southern Africa, they will be led by Grand Union’s authentic experts born or brought up in these musical cultures. They will pass on some of their music and techniques, and encourage the students to improvise and/or create their own pieces in response.

Participants will have the opportunity to take part in a special concert on October 29th at St John on Bethnal Green, which will also feature Grand Union Orchestra musicians.
