For its 40th Anniversary year, the Grand Union Orchestra commemorates Black History Month with a specially devised show bringing together different generations of musicians and singers to explore and celebrate the influence of diverse African traditions on our society today.
Much-loved Grand Union musicians of African heritage will lead the programme, all of whom are celebrated exponents of their art and perfectly placed to tell stories of migration through drumming and chant, Latin American and Caribbean music, and jazz.
Focussing on particularly on North Africa and Central Africa as well as West and Southern Africa, they will be led by Grand Union’s authentic experts born or brought up in these musical cultures. They will pass on some of their music and techniques, and encourage the students to improvise and/or create their own pieces in response.
