Older residents in the borough can take part in a ‘sloppy slipper’ exchange.
We are funding independent charity Age UK East London to exchange 150 pairs of worn or ill-fitting slippers for brand new pairs. The offer is open to older people aged 65 or older, on a first come, first served basis.
In addition, a further 50 pairs of slippers will be made available to residents who have recently been admitted into Royal London or Mile End hospital following a fall.
Research has shown that worn out slippers can be a major hazard for older people, especially if they do not fit properly. Although many falls do not cause serious injury, the psychological effect can often be worse than the fall itself.
Applications can be downloaded from Age UK East London website www.ageukeastlondon.org.uk or you can call 8981 7124 to register your interest.
Applications open on Tuesday 22 August and close on Thursday 31 August. The first 150 residents will be contacted on 1 September, and will be advised of our local collection points.
