Less than a week after we launched our bid to become the London borough of Culture, more than 650 people have pledged online to support our bid.

Also helping us in backing the bid is the world renowned actress, Dame Helen Mirren.

Dame Helen, a Tower Hamlets resident, pledged her support with the following message:

“Tower Hamlets, with its own strong London culture and history of the East End has also historically been the landing place for many generations of immigrants. This has created simply the most diverse, interesting, creative, and authentic London community. This very authenticity is what has always attracted artists of all disciplines. It is a hothouse of creativity.”

Supporters have been asked to pledge via the Tower Hamlets back the bid website. Our unique mix of people, place and culture makes our cultural experience quite simply the best of London in one borough.

Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs said:

“We are very pleased by how much support we received in a small amount of time and the numbers are growing at a terrific rate.

“But we need to keep going – every pledge counts. Getting behind the bid is simple; you can use the hashtag #showtimeTH, pledge support via the website and you can also help us with your ideas and opinions for the bid.”

People will have another opportunity to sign up at the incredibly popular Victoria Park fireworks where a stand will be set up to encourage the audience to back the bid. There will be a spectacular, free sci- fi themed fireworks display on 5 November.  Produced by Walk the Plank, this year’s Guy Fawkes celebration will bring an exciting sci-fi vibe with a mix of both contemporary and classical tracks synchronised to a dizzying sequence of fireworks and special effects.

Blasting off at 7pm, residents can journey to the stars and enjoy a stunning and free display. The park will be open earlier in the evening with refreshments available to be bought on site from 5.30pm. Further details available at: Fireworks display

Victoria Park will also be the home to the brand new All Points Easts festival from organisers AEG, who are also behind Coachella, in May 2018.

It opens with a three-day festival, with London three-piece the xx and closes with three standalone concerts on consecutive nights.  Ohio alt-rock band the National have been announced as well as the War on Drugs, Future Islands and Warpaint. The festival site will be free to enter during the four days, featuring comedy and food events along with an outdoor cinema.

Tower Hamlets has had a terrific couple of weeks for arts  and culture with the long awaited return of the Henry Moore sculpture of a draped woman, affectionately known as Old Flo, back on public display in east London  and the announcement of a month long vibrant festival of drama with the Season of Bangla  kicking off tomorrow.
