We are delighted that local resident and much acclaimed actor, Sir Ian McKellen has come on board to back Tower Hamlets bid to become the London Borough of Culture.

Sir Ian said:

"I have lived in Tower Hamlets since 1980 and was impressed with the welcome the locals gave an outsider attracted by the river and the potential of the decaying Docklands. The variety of cultures available in the Borough remains perhaps its most admirable characteristic. History and the future go hand in hand. The diversity around one is what has kept me here for nearly forty years.

"Within walking distance of my home, there is the bronze-age casting foundry overlooking the Limehouse Basin at the start of Britain’s canal system. In the other direction stands Wilton’s Music Hall, one of the most remarkable ancient theatres in the capital. Whether it’s a handful of surviving pubs for a gay clientele, open spaces for everyone and in my street, one of the outstanding primary schools in the country, there is nothing wrong with Tower Hamlets: except…

"The racial mix in the Borough is not always an easy one. Sometimes I feel we live in a corridor between the City and Canary Wharf, unregarded by the daily traffic, west to east and west again. Anything that helps to bring us together is welcome.

"That is why I enthusiastically support Tower Hamlets bid to become the London Borough of Culture. I congratulate the Mayor on launching the Award.”

With just over two weeks to go, every pledge counts!  Supporters can pledge via the Tower Hamlets back the bid website.

Our unique mix of people, place and culture makes our cultural experience quite simply the best of London in one borough.
