VCS Grants programme

The council’s Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) strategy 2016-19 points the way towards commissioning being the main way we will fund voluntary and community sector activities in the future. However, the strategy also recognises the value of grants and makes a commitment to keeping a grants programme but limited to where it can be shown this is a better way of funding than through commissioning. The grants programme will bring together all the smaller grants schemes currently run by the council and will sit alongside the more extensive Community Commissioning Programme to replace the Mainstream Grants programme (MSG).

A Grants Policy Framework has been produced through a process of co-production with the VCS and is the first stage towards developing a corporate grants programme to be launched in the summer. During the spring and early summer 2018 more work will be done to co-produce detailed priorities and outcomes for each of the funding themes, the processes and procedures.

The Grants Policy Framework, will be considered by the council’s Cabinet on 20 March 2018 and, from 13 March you can read the report from Cabinet 20 March 2018

The policy framework sets out:

  • the rationale for grants
  • initial themes for different funding streams within the grants programme
  • eligibility criteria
  • levels of funding
  • decision making and accountability.

You can read the latest draft Grants Policy Framework.

The grants programme being co-produced with the sector and, as part of its commitment to co-production, the council is working closely with Tower Hamlets council for Voluntary Service (THCVS). THCVS has set up a website specifically for the grants programme. You will find details of all the sessions which have taken place so far, copies of presentations and feedback.

The second phase of the development of the grants programme has started and there are workshops planned to look at priorities and outcomes for each funding theme, the application process and how projects will be assessed and monitored.  To take part in any of these sessions, please visit council's grants programme page.

The first session, Developing Outcomes and Priorities will take place on 12 March. To book your place, please visit Outcomes and Priorities event booking page.
