Housing Benefit Cap

Household benefits have been capped at £442.31 per week (£23,000 a year) for a couple or a family – regardless of how many children they have - and £296.35 (£15,410 a year) for a single person.

Please note that the benefit cap does NOT apply to residents claiming Personal Independence Payment or families where a child is claiming Disability Living Allowance.

Bedroom Tax

From April 2013, the government introduced new size criteria for working age housing benefit claimants in social housing. This cut the amount of benefit that people can get if they are deemed to have a spare bedroom in their council or housing association home. This means that people living in houses that are larger than their assessed need (under-occupiers) will have their Housing Benefit reduced. They will have to make up the difference in rent or move to somewhere smaller.

Discretionary Housing Payments

Discretionary Housing Payments can provide some money over the short-term for people who have difficulty making up the shortfall in their housing benefit. This is only a temporary measure and funds are limited. This template can be used to support applications.
