Booming Britain: Record Breaking Statistics of Start-Up Businesses

According to data produced by Companies House, Start-ups have been growing in record numbers during the first quarter of this year.

The data indicates 31,294 net new companies were created between January and March of this year. That is an increase of more than 50 per cent on last year’s figures.

Net company start-ups were already running close to record levels in 2014 at more than 95,000, but the new first-quarter figures suggest that the trend is accelerating rapidly.

2015 could well be the year that breaks the start-up record in Britain.

Boost Profit For Your Business By Saving On Your Energy Bill

Energy is a significant cost to any small business. It is therefore a wise move to adopt energy-efficient measures. Yet there is evidence that only a minority of small businesses are doing this. The Forum for Private Business found that 87 per cent of businesses reported an increase in energy costs in 2013. Despite this, according to the Business Energy Index, 53 per cent of small businesses in the UK have no methods in place to manage energy efficiency.

A recent Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) member’s survey found that 58 per cent agreed that energy bills are difficult to understand and 70 per cent found it difficult to compare tariffs.

A Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) study in 2010 also found that 60 per cent of SMEs based in commercial sites rented from commercial landlords. The landlord-tenant issue is arguably the biggest barrier to addressing energy efficiency. A recent Citizens Advice survey, found that many business owners would like to do something, but they don’t own the building or the landlord won’t let them and 17 per cent don’t actually have direct responsibility for their bills, unaware of how much they are spending on energy. This has driven many start-ups to move into co-working spaces or business accelerators.

Five Tips For A Great Business Plan

  1. Get rid of the fluff: Even if it sounds nice, fluff gets you nowhere and wastes space. Plus, no investors want to read a long business plan. Get to the point quickly.
  2. Be realistic: You should be honest with yourself in your business plan, which is why it’s important to consider challenges and opportunities. If you’ve got a strong idea, let it stand on its merit.
  3. Show you’re conservative: Use examples to demonstrate that you’re conservative in your approach and projections.
  4. Visuals are good: Use graphs, charts, and images can help bring your concept to life. Plus, it breaks up the text and helps a plan flow better.
  5. Be creative: Include a creative element in your business plan so you stand out and grab someone’s attention such as investors. Do something unique to make the plan yours.

Funding for Lending Scheme for SMEs

The Bank and HM Treasury launched the Funding for Lending Scheme (FLS) on July 13, 2012. The FLS is designed to incentivise banks and building societies to boost their lending to the UK real economy.  It does this by providing funding to banks and building societies for an extended period, with both the price and quantity of funding provided linked to their lending performance.

The Bank and HM Treasury announced an extension which allows participants to borrow from the FLS until January 2016, with incentives to boost lending skewed towards small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).

Research Reveals The Importance of Pop-Ups in Starting New Businesses

New research carried out by digital communications company EE has revealed that 11.6 million people plan to start their own business within the next 2 years. Of these, almost a third plan to do so by launching a pop up.

Last year’s research indicated that pop-up stores contribute a massive £2.1bn to the UK economy, with this years’ research revealing that 39 per cent of people are inspired by the success of pop-ups.

The research also discloses some of the nation’s most popular types of pop-up stores. Mini food retailers are the UK’s pop-up of choice with 30 per cent of the vote, followed by drink pop-ups with 18 per cent.

However, challenges still exist with technology being identified as one of the main areas of concern.
