Public sector equality duty - next steps

Improving our equality monitoring data

In collecting the data to publish, we identified those services which we provide which are relevant to the aims of the Equality Act 2010, which are to:

  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation;
  • Advance equality of opportunity between people from different groups; and
  • Foster good relations between people from different groups.

For those services where we do not currently collect data on all nine protected characteristic groups, we have developed action plans to improve data collection.

In addition to those service specific actions, we will be taking a number of steps to improve equality data collection across the organisation to extend the range of data we are able to publish in future. These include:

  • Standardisation of the categories used to collect information to enable data sets to be compared;
  • Review of our equality monitoring guidance and templates to incorporate monitoring information for the two protected characteristics covered by the Equality Act which we have not previously collected: pregnancy/maternity and marriage/civil partnership;
  • An organisational communications campaign to improve practice in collecting equality monitoring information and increase response rates.
